Step

Launch  Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. If you need to, download and install Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge before continuing set up.

Step

Navigate to your Canvas course and click Settings.

Step

Click the Navigation tab.

Step

Move the Secure Exam Proctor link out of the hidden items list so that it is visible in the course navigation. To learn more, visit How do I manage Course Navigation links?

After it's moved, click Save.

Step

Click the Secure Exam Proctor link you just added to the course navigation. Follow the steps to install the Proctorio Chrome extension.

Please Note: If you don’t see the link, check again in the Navigation settings that the link is enabled. If you still don’t see it, you likely already have the Proctorio extension installed. Verify you have the extension installed by looking for the Secure Exam Proctor (shield) icon in the upper right corner of Google Chrome. If so, skip to the next step.

Step

To enable Proctorio for a Quiz, view the Enabling Proctorio on Canvas video or continue to read the steps below.

Step

Navigate to the Canvas Quiz.

Note: Any Quizzes that already have proctoring enabled will have (Remotely Proctored) included in their name.

Step

Click the Edit button.

Step

Scroll to Quiz Restrictions and check the box next to Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor.

Please Note: Proctorio is only compatible with Classic Quizzes. If you do not see a Questions tab on this page, you may be editing a New Quiz. To create a Classic Quiz instead, return to the Quizzes page, click + Quiz, and choose Classic Quizzes.

Step

Set a Time Limit for the Quiz. Proctorio quizzes require a time limit less than 8 hours.

Step

Click the Proctorio Settings tab that has now appeared near the top of the page.

Step

You must enable a number of settings to take advantage of Proctorio’s anti-cheating measures. The following steps describe the settings we recommend enabling.

Step

Enable Record Video, Record Audio, Record Screen, and Record Web Traffic to help ensure a distraction-reduced test environment for all students.

Step

Under Lock Down Options, set Force Full Screen to Moderate and enable all the other options EXCEPT for Prevent Re-entry.

  • If you set Force Full Screen to Severe or you enable Prevent Re-entry, your students can be kicked out of their exam for common scenarios like poor internet connections or email notifications.
  • If you wish to allow students to access the internet/Canvas during the exam, disable the Force Full Screen option and tell students to open another browser during the exam.

Step

Under Verification Options, enable all the options except for Verify Login, which is only used for external assessments.

Step

Under In-Quiz Tools, enable the calculator and/or whiteboard functions if you wish students to have access to these tools during the test.

Step

There’s no need to configure the Proctorio Behavior Settings at this time. See Proctorio - Post-Exam Review for more information.

Step

Click Save.

Please Note: From now on, when you need to adjust your Quiz settings, be sure to do so using Chrome. Otherwise, your Quiz may become configured improperly. Also when you publish your quiz and students begin taking it, you will be unable to adjust any Proctorio settings.

Step

To give your students a chance to install Proctorio and check for problems in advance, we recommend setting up a practice quiz. Learn more by visiting Proctorio - Set up a practice exam.

Please note: If students encounter issues accessing Proctorio related to a disability, please contact dsproctor@colorado.edu for alternative proctoring arrangements.
