Secure Computing - Nudge for macOS Updates

Nudge is a new tool OIT will be using to enforce macOS updates on your Apple computer. Nudge utilizes a simple and more convenient upgrade path for you and your device. Instead of OIT managing updates in the background, you will now be prompted to update your own devices through Apple’s Software Update utility in System Preferences. This allows you to meet the security standards set by the University on your own schedule and with a more consistent update experience.

Nudge Notifications

When a new update becomes available for your Apple computer, you will begin receiving pop-up notifications asking you to update your device. You may follow the prompts right away or defer them to a later time that is more convenient for you.

Clicking the blue Update Device button will open Software Update for you. You will then follow the prompts from Apple to download and install the update. If a restart is required, you may choose a time that is most convenient to do so.

Clicking the Later... button will close the Nudge notification and allow you to continue working.

Nudge Update Schedule

After OIT has tested the new update, it will become available for you to install. An installation deadline will be selected 2-3 weeks from the date it becomes available. Critical security updates may have a shorter installation deadline. The Nudge notification will inform you how many days you have left to complete the installation.

  • When there are more than 7 days left to install the update, you will be prompted once per day at the end of the day.
  • When there are less than 7 days left to install the update, you will be prompted once per hour on the hour.
  • After the deadline has passed, the Nudge notification will blur the rest of your screen and you will not be able to continue working until you complete the update.

If you have any questions about this update process, please contact your IT Department or the IT Service Center.
