Features
SharePoint is a Microsoft 365 application that allows users to easily create websites for sharing information and tracking and collaborating on projects. SharePoint offers many out-of-the-box features to help users share, organize and discover information that is relevant to a department, team or project.
SharePoint provides a number of site templates to simplify site creation for a variety of functions. When you request a new SharePoint site, you’ll be asked to choose between two templates: team site or communication site.
- Team site: Request a team site if your goal is to create a place where you and your team can work on projects and share information. A team site includes a group of related webpages, a default document library for files, lists for data management, and web parts that you can customize to meet your needs. To learn more about team sites, see Microsoft's Create a Team Site in SharePoint page.
- Communication site: Request a communication site if your goal is to distribute information to users outside of your team or work group. To learn more about communication sites, see Microsoft's Create a Communication Site in SharePoint page.
Once your site is created, you can choose to apply a Microsoft-provided site template that may contain pre-populated pages, page templates, news post templates, or web parts that can be customized to fit your business needs.
Note: SharePoint is a document and content management system that takes time to learn how to use effectively, and some of the more advanced features may require support from an IT Professional. OIT provides limited support to customers who decide to use SharePoint for document storage.
