Google Workspace Accessibility - Sheets

Accessibility Considerations

Google Sheets is an online spreadsheet application that lets you create and format spreadsheets and collaborate with other people in real time. General information about using Google Sheets with screen readers can be found on Google’s Get started in Google Sheets with a screen reader page.

Screen readers are generally compatible with Google Sheets; however, some issues still exist. If you are using NVDA, VoiceOver, or JAWS, it is best to use the screen reader’s application mode for better performance.

Accessibility features and options for Google Sheets

  • When screen reader support is enabled, an "Accessibility" menu is available in the menu bar with shortcuts for reading and navigation.
  • Screen reader support for reading and editing, including comments and cell highlighting.
  • Features and navigation are keyboard accessible.
  • Supports screen magnifiers.
  • Supports alt text on charts and images.
  • Notifications and collaborator information is spoken.
  • Supports keyboard shortcuts. Open a list of shortcuts any time by pressing Ctrl + / (Windows, Chrome OS) or Command + / (Mac).

Alternatives and/or Workarounds

In order to make a spreadsheet accessible for most users, it is best to convert a Google Sheet document to a Microsoft Excel document. To export the spreadsheet as an Excel file, use the following shortcuts:

  • Mac: Control + Option + F, then D, then Enter.
  • Windows using Chrome:  Alt + F, then D, then Enter.
  • Windows using other browsers:  Alt + Shift + F, then D, then Enter.
