Zoom Transcription Options
Recording a meeting with Zoom provides the option to download a transcript of the meeting. Zoom offers two options for Transcription:
- Transcription with AI Companion enabled
- Meeting summary with AI Companion must be enabled
- Smart recording with AI Companion must be enabled
- AI Companion must be activated during the Zoom meeting
- Meeting recording must be started
- Transcription without AI Companion enabled
Zoom does not provide accuracy percentages for its transcription feature. However, the Zoom AI Performance Report 2024 includes accuracy findings on the subject of AI transcription as well as the AI meeting summary.
To access the AI transcript for a meeting, please see the Zoom article Accessing meeting transcripts for Meeting Summary with AI Companion.
To access the non-AI-created transcript for a meeting, please see Downloading conversation recording and transcript.

3rd Party Transcription Options
Through the Zoom App Marketplace, there are several options for transcription services that integrate with Zoom. Review the list of Zoom App Marketplace’s current transcription services and OIT's list of currently approved Zoom apps for campus. Each Zoom app is required to go through the campus Security and Accessibility process before being approved.
OIT 2025 Transcription Study
In the spring of 2025, the Office of Technology (OIT) Academic Technology team looked into the accuracy rate of Zoom transcriptions by the following:
- Zoom meeting created with AI Companion transcription
- Zoom meeting created without AI Companion transcription
- 3rd party transcription of imported Zoom recording
OIT found that transcriptions created with the AI Companion were accurate 85% of the timewhile transcriptions created without the AI companion were only accurate 48% of the time
3rd party transcriptions of imported Zoom recordings were accurate between 75% ~ 96% of the time, depending on the application. We also saw a higher accuracy rate when importing a recording of a Zoom meeting where the AI Companion is enabled compared to a Zoom meeting where the AI companion was not enabled
OIT’s recommendation for Zoom transcriptions is to use the native features of Zoom. Using Zoom with the AI Companion enabled will provide better results than without AI Companion. If a more accurate transcription is needed, 3rd party applications can provide this level of accuracy. Additionally, you can reach out to the Digital Accessibility Office to learn more about their transcription & captioning services.
