BioRender

BioRender is a cloud-based scientific illustration platform that enables researchers, faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students to create professional-quality figures, publication graphics, grant proposals, posters, presentations, and educational materials.

Through a centrally managed CU Boulder agreement, OIT provides access to BioRender Premium licenses at a discounted rate while handling vendor management, licensing, and renewals on behalf of campus users. BioRender is widely used across multiple research disciplines and supports CU Boulder's teaching and research mission.

  • Academic teaching & learning

The software can't be used for:

  • Commercial purposes (for profit)
  • Non-academic research
  • Administrative purposes (university business)

Cost

A BioRender Premium license is available for purchase as an annual subscription. All licenses expire on August 14 of each year. The software price is prorated based on your purchase date, as specified in the table below.

What's Included 

A BioRender Premium license includes:

  • Access to BioRender's scientific illustration platform
  • Premium scientific icon and template libraries
  • Publication-quality figure creation tools
  • Collaboration and sharing capabilities
  • Academic use rights for research, teaching, and grant submissions
  • Access to BioRender training and support resources

Specific features are determined by the BioRender Premium subscription level included in CU Boulder's agreement.

How to get it

BioRender licenses can be requested through OIT software licensing.

  1. Submit a BioRender license request to oitsoftware@colorado.edu including user IdentiKey(s) and SpeedType for billing. Also indicate if you have an existing paid or free BioRender account.  
  2. OIT will review eligibility and license availability.
  3. Once approved, an invitation will be sent to activate your BioRender account.
  4. Charges will be applied according to the funding information provided during the request process.

Licenses are assigned to individual named users and are not shared between multiple individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have an individual BioRender subscription. Can I move to the CU Boulder license?

Yes. If you currently have an individual BioRender subscription and would like to move to the CU Boulder license, contact BioRender directly regarding any available refund or credit options associated with your existing subscription. BioRender has indicated that they can work with users transitioning to the CU Boulder agreement. Please contact support@biorender.com for assistance. OIT is unable to provide refunds for subscriptions purchased directly from BioRender.

Does the CU Boulder BioRender license include BioRender Graphing?

No. The CU Boulder BioRender offering currently includes BioRender Premium licenses only. BioRender Graphing is not included in the campus agreement at this time. Check this page for future updates on Graphing availability

Does the CU Boulder BioRender license include AI credits?
