Our Approach
At CU Boulder, we are taking a measured approach to enabling and integrating generative AI features in Canvas.
OIT and the Academic Technology and Support team recognize that introducing AI into teaching and learning requires careful consideration and that preferences regarding AI adoption vary across educators, learners and instructional contexts.
Our Commitments
As AI technologies are evolving rapidly, we are committed to learning, adapting and incorporating select AI capabilities into Canvas in a transparent, purposeful and responsible way.
As Canvas continues to explore and develop new AI features, we commit to:
- Proactive Review via the Information and Communication Technology Integrity (ICT) Process
All AI features and integrations will undergo CU Boulder's ICT review before release. This ensures visibility for security and accessibility teams and helps assess potential risks before features impact students, educators or staff.
- Feature Previews and Partnerships
When possible, we will partner with educators, students and other constituents to review, test, and preview new AI features. These previews help evaluate a variety of factors and help determine if and when broader implementation is appropriate.
- Opt-In Enablement
AI features will be released as opt-in. Educators and students can decide if, when and where AI features make sense in their Canvas experience. Instructors retain control over which AI features are available in their courses.
- Transparent Documentation
We will document and share Canvas AI feature availability, including links to AI Nutrition Facts, to support informed decision-making by faculty and students.
- Support for All Teaching and Learning Approaches
We will support educators and learners across a range of approaches, from not using AI to actively integrating it into teaching and learning. We seek to empower educators to use solutions that align with their needs and best serve our students.
- Collaboration, Best Practices and Alignment
We will partner with colleagues in OIT and across campus to investigate, learn, share and align on best practices as members of a community. This includes aligning with CU Boulder AI Guidance and seeking input from groups such as the AI Strategic Steering Committee, Academic Technology Advisory Group (ATAG), BFA Academic Technologies and Services Committee (ATSC), and the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) to ensure informed, collaborative decision making about AI in education.
- Vendor Partnership and Advocacy
We will continue to work with Canvas, regularly reviewing their AI Guiding Principles and staying informed about how they design and implement AI tools, while advocating for transparency, security and ethical use of AI in the learning management system.
