How Deleted Items Are Managed in Outlook

Submitted by jach7912 on

This week OIT will implement a change that will alter the length of how long items stay in your Outlook “Deleted Items” folder. When the campus transitioned from Exchange 2007 to the Exchange Online service, the existing “Deleted Items” purge policy did not transition over. Previously, anything filed in the “Deleted Items” folder would automatically be purged after 30 days.

To avoid holding on to messages that have been marked for deletion, it’s a good idea to empty “Deleted Items” folder regularly. Tomorrow, December 22, the 30-day purge policy will be re-enacted for the “Deleted Items” folder. Starting Thursday, January 21, 2016, items older than 30 days in users’ “Deleted Items” folder will be automatically purged. Please move any items you don’t want deleted from this folder before then.

Users will be able to recover purged items themselves for an additional 30 days by utilizing the “Recover Deleted Items” feature.
