Network Switch Upgrades and Evening Service Impacts

Submitted by stauffeg on

OIT has kicked off a project that will upgrade all network switches across campus, as part of a normal life-cycle replacement schedule, by the end of 2020. The replacements will take place on a building-by-building basis during the evening hours of business days, from 6 pm to 10 pm. This will cause network outages, for both wired and Wi-Fi networks, including Cisco VoIP phones, from 30 minutes up to 160 minutes based on the number of switches to be replaced.

The upgraded switches will allow for delivery of higher-bandwidth network services and support growth of the campus network. The upgrade process was completed in residence halls over the summer of 2018 and will take place in the rest of campus buildings between November 2018 and the end of 2020. The scheduling of a building’s switch replacements will be coordinated with the help of building proctors, telecommunication liaisons, and IT practitioners. As buildings are scheduled, they will be added to a spreadsheet on the Network Switch Upgrade project page. Please note that the ordering of new network services or changes to existing services will be frozen for two weeks prior to a building’s switch replacements in order to ensure service continuity.

If you have questions about the Network Switch Upgrade project, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).
