TLS 1.0 & 1.1 retirement impacts

Submitted by stauffeg on

The software industry has been moving away from the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 security protocols for the last number of years, and if you are using an older browser or email program, it could stop working if you don’t upgrade. The good news is that few people still use browsers or email programs that use TLS 1.0 or 1.1 which were published in 1999 and 2006 respectively.

OIT’s Dedicated Desktop Support customers shouldn’t need to worry about this retirement as supported computers have received upgrades that phased out TLS 1.0 and 1.1 years ago. In some cases, OIT has been able to determine which Microsoft Exchange account owners might be using an email program that utilizes these older protocols and has emailed the impacted account owners.

To keep your data and devices secure, you should always keep your programs and apps up-to-date. To learn how to update your browser or turn on security settings, please choose your browser from the following list: Firefox; Chrome; Safari; Internet Explorer. You can find more IT security tips and best practices on OIT’s Security Awareness pages.

If you have questions about the retirement of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 or need help to update your software, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone). Dedicated Desktop Support customers can get help by submitting a request in the DDS service request portal.
