Internet Kiosk Service Being Discontinued

Submitted by stauffeg on

The campus internet kiosk service, also known by the name SCARPIEs, will be discontinued by the end of summer 2016. These kiosks are generally located in high traffic areas like the UMC and some entryways in other buildings. This discontinuation will not impact computers that are located in campus computer labs.

SCARPIEs in the UMC.The original purpose of the SCARPIEs service was to provide quick internet and email access to CU Boulder’s student population. With changes in technology through the years, students rely far less on these kiosks for this access and instead use their own portable computing devices or smartphones. For these reasons, the SCARPIEs service is increasingly underutilized and therefore it seems appropriate to retire the service at this time.

Given proximity to computer labs, some SCARPIEs kiosks were often used for printing. However, the campus mobile printing service is a more convenient and readily accessible way of printing from any computing device. Mobile printing allows Buff OneCard holders to queue print jobs to any campus printer station, from any device that supports email, using an @colorado.edu address.

In some cases, SCARPIEs help meet the specific business needs of a specific department. OIT is working with these departments to discuss alternative services to meet these business needs.

If you have questions about the SCARPIEs service or its retirement, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).
