Examity is no longer recommended for online exam proctoring

Due to recent failures of the service, OIT no longer recommends using Examity for online exam proctoring. We heard from a number of instructors who used Examity for practice exams that they encountered problems preventing more than half of their students from using the service. To compound the issues, many students were unable to receive sufficient support when they contacted Examity. If you still choose to use Examity, we encourage you to prepare for possible service and support issues by providing alternative options to students.

For these reasons, we have made Proctorio available within Canvas, and recommend that instructors use Proctorio instead of Examity for spring 2020 final exams. We realize that this quick pivot from one tool to another, so close to the start of exams, is disconcerting and disruptive. Unfortunately, our review process of Examity had to be expedited in response to the campus move to emergency remote teaching and learning, and did not surface these issues before this point. We apologize. We are confident that Proctorio is a better solution for online exam proctoring for CU Boulder. The Leeds School of Business and the Department of Computer Science have successfully used Proctorio for several semesters.

You can learn more about how to access Proctorio and get support on the Proctorio service page. Also, you are welcome to attend Proctorio training sessions over the coming days. You will find more information about these sessions on the Academic Technology Trainings page. The training will be provided by a CU Boulder faculty member who has used Proctorio extensively. If you have questions about Proctorio or this change, please contact the IT Service Center at oithelp@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357.
