Successful Overhaul of Identity Management Service

Submitted by jach7912 on

Many may not have noticed, but this past February there was a complete overhaul of one of CU Boulder’s most essential services - the Identity Management service. Oracle Identity Management (OIM) replaced the legacy Sun Identity Manager that was deployed in 2009. This service supports the provisioning of IdentiKeys, which are an integral part of student, faculty and staff’s daily lives.

The Benefits

One of the main enhancements is the new user interface. Replacing the outdated cuidm.colorado.edu, identikey.colorado.edu has a cleaner design, is more intuitive, has more self-service options and gives a better first impression for incoming students and new employees.

On the backend, OIM has significantly increased functionality. Many processes are now automated and numerous legacy processes were retired. This up-to-date platform positions us to be more consistent, extensible, and instantly provisions resources for users.

From a security and vendor perspective, OIM is a better-supported identity management system. Security vulnerabilities are patched on a regular basis, enhancements for better functionality are available upon request, and customizations are enabled.

Minimal Impact

Although this transition was a significant undertaking, it had minimal impact to end users. The team completed the project in phases to keep the potential impact small and was able to learn from each transition, preparing for the entire campus overhaul.

This project took a village. Many within OIT contributed to its success and other departments such as campus HR and the University of Colorado Denver Identity and Access Management team enabled this to happen. Thank you for your commitment, dedication, and tenacity throughout this long significant project. Congratulations on your success!
