Turnitin - Leaving GradeMark Feedback in Canvas

GradeMark is a feature of Turnitin (a plagiarism protection tool) that allows an instructor to make comments on student papers, similar to Canvas Speedgrader. GradeMark offers unique features such as pre-written comments (QuickMarks) that some instructors may find useful. The documentation below demonstrates how to use GradeMark to give students feedback within a Canvas course.

*Note: In order to use GradeMark, you must first create a Turnitin assignment. Learn how by visiting Turnitin - GradeMark Integration in Canvas.

Step

Log in to your course and navigate to the Assignment you would like to mark up using Feedback Studio. Note: Visit Turnitin - GradeMark Integration in Canvas to learn how to create a Turnitin-enabled assignment.

Step

Click on the colored circle or percentage in the row labeled Similarity Score, next to the desired student submission.

Step

Click on the blue Checkmark icon on the right-hand side of the page. This will bring up the QuickMarks pane.

Step

You can leave a pre-set comment by either highlighting text in the student submission and clicking the Checkmark icon that appears, or by dragging comments from the QuickMark pane onto the page. Feedback Studio offers many collections of mark sets, which can be selected from the drop-down dialogue at the top of the QuickMark pane. Commonly used marks include:

  • Awkward
  • Comma Splice
  • Citation Needed
  • Vague
  • Missing Quotations
  • Run-on

Step

You can write your own comment by highlighting text and clicking the Comment icon that appears. A small comment window will open where you can type your comment.

Step

Click Save and your comment will minimize. To view, simply hover over the comment with your cursor and the comment will expand. You can edit or delete your comment by clicking the Trashcan icon.

Step

If you would like to enter text directly onto the document, click the place in the document where you would like to type, then click the Text icon in the bubble that appears. When you're finished typing, click elsewhere on the page to exit the text input field.

Step

If you wish to edit mark sets or view them in further detail, click the Settings gear icon. A new window will appear displaying the sets and the marks they contain.

Step

To create a new mark set, click the Menu sign in the upper left-hand corner of the Settings page, and select Create New Set. Type a name for your set, then click Save.

Step

To add marks to a set, select the mark you'd like to add and click + Add to Set. Select the set to which you'd like the mark added.

Step

To create a new mark, click the + sign in the Marks section. Enter a title and description for the mark and click Save.

Step

There are several editing views for Feedback Studio:

  • Hide Instructor Feedback Layer: Clicking this icon hides/shows instructor marks and other feedback within the document.
  • QuickMark: Add QuickMarks or comments (see steps 6–12).
  • Feedback Summary: Add any general comments for the submission. Simply type your comments in the text area, then click Save.
  • Rubric: This option should not be used. It is recommended to create a rubric using Canvas in order to have the scores link to a course gradebook.

Step

When you are finished commenting, close the Feedback Studio browser window/tab. Changes and comments are saved as they are made, so there is no need to save your work when finished. You may also navigate between submissions by clicking the Arrow icons at the top of the Feedback Studio page.
