Breadcrumb TourArchived: How to Get Help for Recalled MacBook Pros

Last Updated: 03/20/2019

Apple has announced a program for the replacement of solid-state drives for specific MacBook Pros sold in 2017-2018. Since Apple warns that this issue may result in data loss and failure of the drive, OIT recommends that owners of affected computers have the drives serviced proactively.

Details of the program

This affects certain MacBook Pro 13” laptops (non Touch Bar) sold in 2017-2018 as follows:

  • Apple model name: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,1
  • Configuration: Models that were purchased with 128GB or 256GB SSD.

To determine if your computer is affected, check your serial number here.

How to get help

OIT recommends that customers who own affected computers have the drives serviced proactively. Here’s how:

  • If your university-owned computer is managed by OIT Dedicated Desktop Support (DDS), please contact DDS for assistance.
  • Otherwise, proceed with the instructions from Apple. OIT recommends that you perform a full backup of your data before taking the MacBook in for service. Please note that OIT is unable to service non-DDS-supported computers for this particular issue.
