What it is
A secondary account is any IdentiKey account other than a user's primary account. It may be an EXC account for use by a student employee or a group account that allows multiple people to access systems and communicate on behalf of a department, unit or group.
While student employee accounts are typically provisioned with access to IT services, secondary group accounts have limited access privileges and are typically used to access group email accounts.
Who can get it
Only currently affiliated CU Boulder faculty and staff members may request or own a secondary account. Secondary accounts for use by student groups must be requested by a Center for Student Involvement (CSI) staff member and are owned by the center.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I create a secondary EXC account for a student employee?
Student employees could use their primary CU Boulder email account for email and calendaring, but many departments prefer to request a secondary account for them to isolate work-related messages and tasks to a separate account that can be terminated when the student employee leaves the department.
I own a secondary account that I should no longer control. How do I transfer ownership to someone else?
If you do not know who the new account owner should be, first contact the group that the account was created for and identify to whom the account should be transferred.
Once you have that information, copy the new account owner on your email to oithelp@colorado.edu and include the following details:
- The exact name of the secondary account as displayed in your secondary accounts list in IdentiKey Manager
- The new owner's first and last name
- The new owner's department
Once OIT transfers ownership to the new account owner, the owner should change the account password.
How can I take ownership of a secondary account used by my department?
In most cases, you will need to contact the current owner of the secondary account to request that ownership be transferred to you (see steps above). Once ownership has been transferred, you should change the password for the account.
If the current owner is no longer employed by CU Boulder, the account can be transferred to anyone in their former department. Please contact the IT Service Center at 303-735-4357 or oithelp@colorado.edu to request the transfer.
How can I disable a secondary account that is no longer in use?
Email oithelp@colorado.edu and request that the account be disabled. Make sure to provide the exact name of the account as it appears in your secondary accounts list in IdentiKey Manager.
I own a secondary account that I don't recognize. What should I do?
Email oithelp@colorado.edu and provide the exact name of the account as it appears in your secondary accounts list in IdentiKey Manager.
