Buff Portal Advising - CSV Input of Course Alert Information

Step

Navigate to the Grades Tool within your Canvas course.

Step

Export your gradebook. The location of the export button will vary by the Gradebook you are using. If you are using the default Gradebook, click Export on the right side of the Gradebook.

If you are using the new Gradebook (beta), open the Actions menu and select Export.

Step

Open the CSV file in Microsoft Excel. 

Step

Click Filter so that you can filter and sort the roster as needed.

Step

Delete the empty row (2) and Points Possible row (3).

Step

Locate the appropriate column for total points or Final Grade and click the dropdown menu arrow in the column header cell. Filter by Descending order

Put a 1 in the Final Grade column for any grades below a C.

Step

Optional: 

  • Locate the column for Attendance and click the dropdown menu arrow in the column header cell.
  • Filter by Ascending order
  • Put a 1 in the cells that indicate excessive absences

Delete all remaining rows. 

Step

If you haven't already, rename column headings to match the format below and remove any additional columns. Save document as .csv file.

Step

Log in to the Buff Portal Advising Early Alerts page then find the appropriate course/section.

Step

All sections of a course can be uploaded at once or separately. The column heading will need to match this format:

SID Below C Excessive Absences Optional Comments

Click on Upload CSV and find the file to upload.

Please Note: Only include students in the file who should receive an alert notification, not the full roster. If any of those .csv columns have a value, it will generate an alert record!

A message will appear indicating the number of net new alerts added from the csv file they upload, X alerts uploaded from .csv. Click Confirm and a success message will appear.
