Buff Portal Advising - CSV Input of Course Alert Information

Step 1

Navigate to the Grades Tool within your Canvas course.

Step 2

Export your gradebook. The location of the export button will vary by the Gradebook you are using. If you are using the default Gradebook, click Export on the upper right side of the Gradebook, then select Export Entire Gradebook

Step 3

Open the CSV file in Microsoft Excel. 

Step 4

Click Filter so that you can filter and sort the roster as needed.

Step 5

Locate the appropriate column for total points or Current Grade and click the drop-down menu arrow in the column header cell. Filter by Descending order. 

Step 6

Put a 1 in the Current Grade column for any grades below a C.

Step 7

Optional: 

  • Locate the column for Attendance and click the drop-down menu arrow in the column header cell.
  • Filter by Ascending order.
  • Put a 1 in the cells that indicate excessive absences.

Step 8

Delete all remaining rows. 

Step 9

If you haven't already, rename column headings to match the format below and remove any additional columns. Save document as .csv file.

Step 10

Log in to the Buff Portal Advising Early Alerts page, then find the appropriate course/section.

Step 11

All sections of a course can be uploaded at once or separately. The column heading will need to match this format:

Click on Upload CSV and find the file to upload.

Please Note: Only include students in the file who should receive an alert notification, not the full roster. If any of those .csv columns have a value, it will generate an alert record!

A message will appear indicating the number of net new alerts added from the csv file they upload, X alerts uploaded from .csv. Click Confirm and a success message will appear.
