Instruction Modes & Technology Mapping

OIT offers a variety of teaching tools for collaboration, video conferencing, interactive presentations and much more for various teaching modalities. The Instruction Modes Table provides further information and key technologies for each mode.

Instruction Modes Table

Hybrid In Person/Online and/or In Person/Remote (HY)

Description

Taught using a combination of in-person learning (same meeting patterns for all enrolled students) with online and/or remote coursework. Hybrid classes are taught simultaneously with some students attending in person and others attending remotely for every class session, with the instructor in the classroom or taught in person at least one in-person class session per week with the other instruction delivered remotely or online, following the same pattern from week to week.

Objective

To replace a significant percentage of face-to-face instruction with online activities (OLC 2015).

A combination of synchronous and asynchronous

Courses follow a set schedule, with required on-campus meetings

Designed specifically for web-based delivery and interaction, without requiring access to campus or participation in scheduled activities

Hybrid Remote/Online (HR)

Description

Taught using a combination of online and remote instruction modes. This means that while some coursework may be completed online at a student's own pace (asynchronously), the class will also meet remotely at designated days/times each week.

To replace all face-to-face instruction with a combination of remote (synchronous) instruction and online (asynchronous) activities

Description

Taught exclusively in person, typically on campus.

Online (OL)

Description

Taught in an online delivery mode and delivered asynchronously, which means students can complete the coursework throughout the week when it is convenient for them. There are no scheduled class meetings.

Objective

To eliminate geography and time as factors in the relationship between the student, instructor, and the institution (OLC 2015).

Content Delivery

Fully asynchronous

Designed specifically for web-based delivery and interaction, without requiring access to campus or participation in scheduled activities.

Description

Remote course content will be delivered synchronously at scheduled days and times in any of the following ways: Zoom, lecture capture or Canvas.
