Is Your Computer’s Operating System Up-to-Date?

Submitted by jach7912 on

In recent months, two significant operating system (OS) versions with wide adoption on PC and Mac reached their end of software support. Windows 7 on PC and macOS Sierra (10.12) on Mac will both no longer receive security updates going forward from their respective vendors, Microsoft and Apple. In addition, many major applications, including CU-provided antivirus utilities and many Adobe products, will no longer install or run on these older OS versions. To ensure that your computer stays protected and your work is not interrupted, be sure to update your OS to a supported version. Visit OIT’s software lifecycle page for the list of recommended OS versions.

Not sure what OS your computer is running? Visit the Apple or Microsoft support page for instructions.

PC Users - Support Discontinued for Windows 7

Today Microsoft discontinued Windows 7 operating system support. To ensure your system is protected and able to use common applications, users running Windows 7 should upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as possible. Dedicated Desktop Support (DDS) customers should already have received an email or communication from their DDS professional to schedule an update.

Apple Users - Upgrade to MacOS Mojave (10.14)

It is recommended that Apple users upgrade to MacOS Mojave (10.14). Mac App store link: Get macOS Mojave. For more information on hardware compatibility and the steps to upgrade: How to upgrade to macOS Mojave

Dedicated Desktop Support (DDS) Customers

Dedicated Desktop Support Customers with Macs running macOS Sierra (10.12) or lower, may have seen DDS-branded prompts to upgrade. After February 1, DDS systems will be automatically upgraded to a supported version of macOS. However, it is recommended that users upgrade prior to the date. If you would like help or have questions about upgrading your operating system, please submit a request through the Dedicated Desktop Support Service Request Portal.

Non-DDS Customers

Microsoft Windows 10 is available to faculty, staff, and student employee computers purchased with CU Boulder funds, and also personal computers used for CU Boulder work, and can be downloaded and installed through the campus EES agreement website. Apple macOS upgrades can be installed on eligible hardware from the Mac App Store.

Personal Computers

Instructions for downloading the recommended operating systems on personally owned devices can be found on Microsoft and Apple websites. CU Boulder faculty, staff, and students are welcome to bring their computer to an OIT Buff Techs Walk-In Center for help with the install.
