Campus information security update

Submitted by stauffeg on

Over the last several months, industries, especially universities, are seeing increased and more sophisticated attacks to their networks, computer systems and online services. CU Boulder is doing everything it can to protect our university community from these attacks. We block attacks daily, and if there is an unlawful entry, we take immediate steps to investigate, notify law enforcement and contain them. If we become aware that a CU Boulder community member’s sensitive personal information has been compromised, we communicate that to them directly and offer identity theft assistance.

Last month, we detected an incident involving the campus information technology infrastructure. The attack has been contained, and there are no immediate impacts to sensitive data or to campus IT services. Our university IT and cybersecurity teams also are working with a third-party information security firm and law enforcement to investigate this criminal activity.

Important next steps

We are taking several steps to enhance our security and, as part of that, we are asking everyone in the CU Boulder community to immediately change their IdentiKey password in CU Boulder IdentiKey Manager. This includes passwords for their personal IdentiKey and any secondary accounts they own. We are encouraging everyone to review the steps to change passwords in IdentiKey Manager before they try to change passwords. If passwords are not changed in the coming days, they will be reset, and community members will not be able to log into CU Boulder online systems until passwords are changed.

Over the coming days, the Office of Information Technology will be sending emails to everyone with an IdentiKey in a tiered manner in order to stagger password changes and ensure we can provide community members the best support possible. Instructions and videos about how to change password(s), including an FAQ, are on the OIT website

In the upcoming months, we will be taking more steps to enhance security. Together, we can better secure and protect our online systems and information.
