Canvas Change: SIDs Are Now the Student Identifier

Submitted by stauffeg on

The student identifier used in Canvas was changed from the Unique Universal Identifier (UUID) to the Student ID (SID) on Saturday, June 2. This change has made Student IDs visible to instructors and TAs in Canvas.

Instructors and TAs can see a column titled "SIS ID" in various places in Canvas, such as the “People” tool and in grade imports and exports. This column used to be populated with each student's Unique Universal Identifier (UUID). However, most instructors expect to see the Student ID in these places instead, since that is the identifier commonly used in other CU Boulder systems such as MyCUInfo.

Instructor feedback on the value of using SIDs as the Canvas student identifier prompted this change. Switching to SIDs also helps campus groups that require SIDs to map students to exam scores.

If you have any questions about this change to SIDs, or about Canvas in general, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).
