ChatGPT Edu access goes live for faculty and staff

Eligible CU Boulder faculty and staff can now access ChatGPT Edu, an optional higher‑education–focused generative AI platform. ChatGPT Edu protects academic freedom and privacy, provides equitable access and is more secure than publicly available platforms. Student access has been delayed until August 14, following input from faculty governance, as announced in a message from the university president and campus chancellors.

The launch follows a University of Colorado systemwide agreement with OpenAI that ensures campus users can access ChatGPT in a FERPA‑compliant, privacy‑aware environment designed specifically for higher education.

A more secure way to use generative AI

Generative AI tools are already widely used across campus. Before the OpenAI agreement was  signed, over 28,000 students, faculty and staff had already created accounts on the publicly available version of ChatGPT using CU Boulder email accounts, with substantially more campus community members likely using personal email accounts for the public version of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Edu offers a safer alternative to public AI platforms, providing stronger privacy protections while still delivering the capabilities users expect. CU Boulder encourages faculty and staff using the public version of ChatGPT to switch over to ChatGPT Edu so that they can benefit from the more data-secure environment. However, please be sure to check the currently available features before deciding to migrate your account to the CU Boulder workspace to ensure that the features you use are available, as some advanced features will not be added to the CU Boulder workspace until the fall.

“Generative AI is already part of the environment in which teaching, learning and research take place,” said Provost Ann Stevens in an edition of CU Boulder Today. “Our responsibility is to engage thoughtfully—by safeguarding data privacy, protecting academic freedom and ensuring equitable access.”

Information entered into CU Boulder’s ChatGPT Edu environment is not used to train AI models, helping reduce data security risks associated with consumer tools and better protect student, faculty, staff and university data.

Access, training and responsible use

  • Required Training: To access ChatGPT Edu, users must complete a required online training that ensures understanding of AI privacy, data protection and appropriate use. Because AI tools are rapidly evolving, the required training will be revised before students are given access to the CU Boulder workspace. At that time, faculty and staff who have accounts in the CU Boulder workspace will need to take the new training to maintain access. The new training will be developed in consultation with an expanded AI Steering Committee that includes shared governance representation.
  • Terms of use acknowledgement: upon login, users must review the ChatGPT Edu terms of use and acknowledge they understand and will follow all AI policies.
  • Optional Canvas Course: CU Boulder also offers an optional AI Literacy Foundations self‑paced course in Canvas for those who want to deepen their understanding of generative AI, including its strengths, limitations and ethical considerations.
  • Accessing ChatGPT Edu: Within approximately one hour after completing the required training, users will receive an email with instructions to join the CU Boulder workspace for ChatGPT Edu.

Choice and flexibility

Use of ChatGPT Edu is optional. Faculty retain full authority over pedagogy and assessment, and students and staff may choose whether and how they use ChatGPT Edu or any of the other campus-approved AI toolsDraft AI syllabus statements are available to faculty seeking additional guidance.

Faculty, staff and student input will be critical to guide decisions about campus AI literacy, ChatGPT Edu evaluation, training and future direction. Academic Affairs and Operations are working together to expand our campus AI Steering Committee and refresh and clarify its charge as we move forward with ChatGPT.  As Stevens has pointed out, “This contract is not the end of the conversation. It is the beginning of a more structured and inclusive one."

Campus AI tools

ChatGPT Edu, which is approved for use with public and confidential data when logged in with a CU account, is just one of a number of campus-approved AI tools CU Boulder makes available. The campus community also has access to Microsoft Copilot, Google’s NotebookLM and Gemini Web App, and many other AI-enabled tools. These tools are a starting point for CU Boulder’s ongoing, community‑informed exploration of generative AI and push for broader AI literacy. The focus remains on learning together—supporting innovation while ensuring new technologies serve the university’s academic and public mission.
