This June, the Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) hosted its first-ever Digital Accessibility Summer Camp. Staff members, student employees and faculty members from across the CU System, and even some local community colleges, came together to learn about digital accessibility, build practical skills and forge cross-campus connections.

Summer Camp Recap

Over two-and-a-half days, campers explored assistive technologies, manual versus automated accessibility testing, usability testing and document accessibility. Through a demonstration, campers learned how Job Access with Speech (JAWS) works as a screen reader and what to consider when creating accessible digital content, so screen reader users can navigate confidently.

DAO staff, Mike, Elle, Megan, Ally, Marisha, and Shilpa dressed in camping attire posed with camping gear (paddles, innertubes, trekking poles, and camping chairs) in front of a 'Welcome to Camp DAO; where campy is done best' sign.

Campers continued building their digital accessibility skills through sessions on captioning, audio description workflows, presentation accessibility and PDF accessibility. A "Progress Over Perfection" panel encouraged campers to approach accessibility as an ongoing learning process, doing the right thing over approaching accessibility as a checkbox to be ticked.

Missed this year's camp?

The Digital Accessibility Summer Camp will return next year!

In the meantime, take advantage of the DAO's year-round service offerings to help build a more accessible digital environment.

  • Assessment and Usability Testing: If you manage digital technology on campus, schedule a manual accessibility test by the DAO team to determine how accessible your technology is.
  • Captioning and Accessible Media: Captioning, transcription and audio description support and resources for faculty, staff and students. This includes training and consultations at no cost.
  • Training: In addition to self-paced training courses, the DAO offers free customized training on a variety of topics, such as digital content and document fundamentals, PDF accessibility, accessible presentation practices, and more!
