Import Zoom Attendance into Canvas Gradebook

This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to import participation data from Zoom directly into your Canvas Gradebook using the Import Zoom Attendance Canvas Enhancement. For more information about this and similar Canvas enhancement tools, visit the Canvas Enhancements page.

Step

Install TamperMonkey using your preferred browser, and then visit the Import Zoom Attendance source page. TamperMonkey will detect that you are trying to install this script and open an information panel. Click Install to proceed.

Please note: you only need to download and install TamperMonkey and the enhancement once to be able to import Zoom attendance files into Canvas.

Step

Once the enhancement is installed, you’ll need to download a Zoom participants report for the appropriate class session. To do this, log in to Zoom with your IdentiKey and password.

Please Note: You’ll need to turn on Only authenticated users can join option in the Zoom meeting settings to have students’ names captured correctly for importing them into Canvas.

Step

Once logged in, select Reports from the left hand toolbar, then click Usage. This will open a list of meetings you scheduled. Note that you have to be the one who scheduled the meeting in order to access this data.

Step

Find the meeting for which you would like to download participation data. Edit the date range for your search at the top of the screen.

Step

After finding the correct meeting, scroll to the right side of the table and find a column titled Participants. Click the blue number that corresponds with your intended meeting. This will open a list of all meeting participants.

Step

At the top of the Meeting Participant window, select Export with meeting data. If available, select Show unique users. This will make it so each participant only appears once in your list. In the event that a participant left and returned to the meeting, there will be only one listing for that participant with a total duration for the entire meeting.
Click Export to download the .csv file with this data.

Step

After downloading the Zoom participants report, navigate to the Grades area of your Canvas course and find Import Zoom attendance at the top of the page.

Please Note: This button is added to Canvas courses after installing the Import Zoom Attendance enhancement (see Step 1). You also need to be using the same browser where you installed TamperMonkey.

Step

Select the file you exported from Zoom.

Step

If any of the students in the Zoom session did not sign in using their CU Boulder credentials, Zoom will not have captured their emails, and the tool will be unable to import their attendance into Canvas. You will need to manually enter an attendance grade for these students in Canvas after the import finishes. Click Ok.

Step

If desired, adjust the assignment name, points, and assignment group. If you enter the name of an existing assignment, attendance scores will be imported into it and replace any previous grades, with the exception of Excused (EX) grades, which are never overwritten.

Step

If desired, adjust the minimum number of minutes a user needed to attend the Zoom meeting in order to receive credit.

Step

If you wish to just import scores for students in a particular section, select that section from the dropdown list. This is useful if your course has multiple sections that each meet on a separate Zoom call.

Step

When finished with adjustments, click Import.
