How it works
Copilot uses large language models (LLMs) and integrates a user's data with the Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 apps. It provides real-time intelligence by generating content relevant to a user's tasks, such as drafting, summarizing and answering questions.
What it can do
Copilot can be used to:
- Rewrite or adjust text
- Write requests for proposals
- Give bullet lists
- Work on questions
- Reference people in files
- Generate images
Where it works
Copilot works with popular Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.

The software can be used for:
- Academic teaching & learning
- Academic research (nonprofit)
- Administrative purposes (university business)
The software can't be used for:
- Commercial purposes (for profit)
- Non-academic research
Where it can be installed
University-owned computers used exclusively by the licensed subscriber
What types of data can be used
The approved data level for Microsoft 365 Copilot is public & confidential data within the Microsoft 365 platform (see CU Boulder AI Tools List and CU Data Classification).
Please note: Microsoft 365 Copilot uses any data stored or shared within the user's Microsoft 365 platform (e.g., Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Microsoft Office, etc.). Please reference OIT's storage solutions by data requirements to learn more about storing sensitive data in the Microsoft 365 platform.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is available for purchase for $216. All subscriptions expire one year from the purchase date.
