Service Overview

PlayPosit is an in-video quiz tool available as a Canvas integration. Each video quiz is called a "bulb" and can contain a variety of quiz question types.

PlayPosit Accessibility Status

PlayPosit's student-facing interface is somewhat accessible to assistive technology users, depending on the question types. The faculty-facing interface has more issues and can be problematic for faculty using assistive technology.

CU Boulder OIT is actively engaged with PlayPosit to remediate the issues found through accessibility testing, and this page will be updated as changes are made.

Statements on this page about the accessibility of PlayPosit's software are based on accessibility testing done in the PlayPosit Learner Player 3.0 in June and July 2024, and may no longer represent the current status of the software.

Information for Assistive Technology Users

All users are recommended to use PlayPosit with Google Chrome. Firefox and Safari can be used with some issues; PlayPosit is not usable with Internet Explorer.

Information for Students Using Screen Readers

Students using assistive technology like screen readers may have issues with STEM-related questions, as the Equation Editor is not accessible. Additionally, accessing the editor toolbar can be difficult or inaccessible, depending on the desired tool. Lastly, there are some focus handling problems, lack of unique labels, and lack of notifications for responding or rewinding that may cause additional confusion.

The discussion tab is somewhat difficult to use. The nesting of replies is only indicated visually; screen reader users will not be able to determine the relationship between replies using their assistive technology alone.

It is recommended that faculty creating PlayPosit quizzes take accessibility training or review resources to apply content accessibility best practices (such as alternative text, headings, etc.). Information for Instructors Using Screen Readers

PlayPosit is not fully accessible to instructors using screen readers. When selecting a question, dialogs are not used correctly, making it difficult to select the correct element or question type. When creating a question, the toolbar for text formatting is not accessible to assistive technology or keyboard users. There are additional issues with focus handling, lack of alert, and elements not implemented correctly that can cause confusion or make it difficult to create a quiz.

Information for Instructors

  • If you are creating your own videos for use in PlayPosit, please consult the Creating Accessible Videos guide on the OIT Accessibility website for ensuring your content is accessible to all students.
  • Consider adding caption files to your videos to improve accessibility and usability for all users. If you have a student with a captioning accommodation, please contact the captioning service for support at captioning@colorado.edu.
  • Canvas Studio and captioning in PlayPosit: The Canvas Studio integration in PlayPosit does not currently support displaying captions from Canvas Studio videos (unlike Kaltura, which displayed them automatically). The best option for making captions available in PlayPosit is to download the caption file from Studio and then upload it to PlayPosit. Details can be found in the Captions for Canvas Studio tutorial.
  • When writing quiz questions, avoid requiring the use of vision to answer the question. For example, instead of asking "How would you summarize the argument made by the man in the red shirt?", consider referring to the man by name or the order in which he speaks.
