Research Computing Helps Shape Tomorrow’s Leaders

Submitted by jach7912 on

Over the past year, in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC), the Research Computing (RC) team has provided an invaluable opportunity for fifteen undergraduate students across the RMACC region. These students have played a role in expanding the capacity of CU Boulder’s regional high-performance computing (HPC) cluster Alpine. Working closely with the system administration team, they have gained hands-on experience in the design, procurement, deployment, and administration of the system.

This program offers students the chance to immerse themselves in the intricacies of designing a research computing cluster in a Unix environment. Additionally, they have had the unique opportunity to visit the University of Colorado Boulder’s data center, where they observed and assisted in the deployment of large-scale computational resources that support RMACC institutions.

Funded by an NSF grant, this initiative equips students with essential skills and practical experience in HPC, preparing them for future careers in the field.

This is just one example of OIT’s commitment to shaping tomorrow’s leaders. Special congratulations go to Shelley Knuth and RMACC collaborators Jan Mandel, Mitchell McGlaughlin, Jarrod Schiffbauer, and Joel Sharbrough for securing the grant. Additional thanks go to Craig Earley for providing mentorship and leadership throughout the program, Lori Flora for coordination and logistics, and Brandon Reyes for delivering training and on-site experiences for the students.
