After her favorite employee graduated, Charlotte reluctantly began to sift through the pile of resumes occupying her desk drawer. One candidate looked especially promising, but Charlotte needed someone that could really rise to the challenge of the job and wanted to be sure. Everything on his resume was impressive and his references checked out, but Charlotte really wanted to get a sense of his work ethic. In a few quick clicks she found herself at the login page to access his student records. Charlotte typed in her password, but her finger hesitated on the "Enter" button. It's a good thing she did hesitate, because Charlotte was one keystroke away from violating FERPA "Legitimate Educational Interest" rules. Following a few simple guidelines, Charlotte avoided a sticky situation with her supervisor. It turns out that her new employee was fantastic and knowledgeable about his own privacy rights as well.
