Proctorio - Getting Started for Students

Proctorio is software your instructor might use when you take an exam remotely. Similar to proctoring in an in-person class, online proctoring is intended to identify suspicious behaviors that may be occurring during an exam. This tutorial will guide you through setting up Proctorio on your computer.

Please note: If your instructor has set a time limit for your exam, the time will not begin until after you have completed Proctorio’s pre-check process.

Step

You can only take a Proctorio-enabled exam using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. If you need to, download and install Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge before continuing set up. If you are unable to install Chrome or Edge, contact your instructor about an accommodation.

Review Proctorio's Minimum System Requirements before attempting to start an exam.

Step

Go to https://getproctorio.com/ and follow the instructions listed on the page to download the Proctorio browser extension.

Please Note: You may need to disable other extensions that interfere with Proctorio, such as Privacy Badger, for the duration of the exam.

Step

Navigate to Quizzes in Canvas and select your exam. Read the information provided by your instructor and then select Take the Quiz.

Step

If you see a screen requesting an access code, Proctorio has not been properly installed or activated. Return to step 1.

Step

On the Before you Begin screen, you will see notices from Proctorio, including any errors you need to resolve before taking the quiz.

Step

If you see a Fix errors to continue button at the bottom of the page, Proctorio has detected issues such as alternate browsers or multiple monitors. Select the button and follow the instructions to resolve.

Please Note: if you see a warning about your computer memory, just ensure other applications are closed before taking your exam and otherwise disregard this message. There is a known issue where Proctorio does not estimate your available memory correctly.

Step

When you see a Start exam pre-checks button, select it to proceed.

Step

Proceed through the System Diagnostics Test, which checks your audio, video, internet and computer requirements. You will be prompted to share your desktop. A popup will appear displaying an image of your desktop. Select the image, then select share.

Step

If your browser prompts you for access, select Allow.

Step

Depending on your exam's settings, you may need to re-test diagnostics.

Step

Proctorio will proceed to an ID Check. Use your Buff OneCard if available; otherwise, you can use any photo ID.

Hold up your ID to the webcam and allow the program to take a snapshot. Verify the snapshot and select Next.

Step

Before and/or during your exam, you may be required to perform Room Scan. To do so, rotate your webcam slowly in a 360 pan of your work surface and every corner of your room.

Step

Finally, Proctorio will ask you to certify that the information collected is correct and that you will abide by CU’s Honor Code when taking your exam. Select I accept, begin exam now to start your exam. If your instructor has set a time limit for your exam the exam time will not begin until you click this button.

Step

If you need additional assistance before or during your exam, Proctorio's Live chat can be accessed by clicking on the browser extension (gray shield icon) or by going to proctorio.com/support and clicking the live chat button. Visit OIT's Proctorio service page for additional support resources.
