This tutorial is operating system independent.

D2L allows for instructors to create sections that randomly order questions for every student. These questions are pulled from a question library to provide a different quiz for each student. Due to questions being randomly selected, all questions will be assigned the same point value. This documentation explains the process of:

  1. Placing questions in the Question Library
  2. Creating a random question section
  3. Importing questions

Step 1

Add to Question Library

Click the Assessments drop-down menu and select Quizzes.

*Note: If you already have questions you wish to use in the question library, move to step 5.

Step 2

Click Question Library.

Step 3

Add questions to the library by clicking either the New or Import button.

Note: Step 4 shows the import process. If you wish to create new questions, reference the Creating Quiz Questions documentation for explanations on all D2L question types.

Step 4

If you chose Import, you will go to the Browse Existing Questions screen. Select your desired questions to import, then click Add.

Step 5

Create Random Section

Click the Assessments drop-down menu, then select Quizzes.

Step 6

Click on the name of the quiz you wish to add a random question section to.

*Note: If you are creating a new quiz, this process is essentially the same. A quiz is created by clicking the New Quiz button. If you run into issues, reference the Create a Quiz tutorial.

Step 7

Under the Properties tab, select Add/Edit Questions.

Step 8

Click the New dropdown menu and select Random Section

Step 9

Add a Section Name.

Step 10

Choose any additional options you wish, then click Save.

Step 11

Import Questions

Click on the title of the newly created section.

Step 12

Click the Import button.

Step 13

Much like when importing to the Question Library, select your collection source (e.g. Collection Root), then choose the questions you wish to have randomized. When finished, click Save.

*Note: If your quiz already has the questions that you wish to have randomized, D2L will not place them in the section. The following message will appear: # of the questions you chose to import already appear in the collection. To get the questions in the random section, the questions will need to be deleted in the quiz prior to import.

Step 14

Choose the number of questions to give per quiz, as well as how much each question will be worth, then click Save.

*Note: Due to the questions being randomized, individual questions within the collection have to have the same point value.

Step 15

Click the Done Editing Questions button.

Step 16

The Properties page will be updated with your new questions and settings. Check everything is correct, then click Save and Close.
