Big Sur Release Information
Apple's most recent operating system, macOS 11 Big Sur, comes pre-installed on new Macs and is available as an upgrade for compatible Macs. For a full listing of new features, please visit the official macOS Big Sur information page.
macOS 11 Big Sur is Supported, not Recommended
Due to ongoing compatibility issues, OIT recommends most people wait to upgrade to macOS 11. Customers who have purchased new devices that came with Big Sur installed, or have an older operating system that needs an update should have no major problems with Big Sur, and OIT will support your IT needs if you upgrade.
OIT recommends that before upgrading to any new operating system, ensure your most used applications are compatible by checking the compatibility issues table below, or by contacting the vendor directly. You may also want to check if your device is compatible with Big Sur.
Generally speaking, it’s best to wait to upgrade until a second or third minor release (or dot release, e.g. 11.2, 11.3, etc.) of an operating system is available. Later releases are generally more stable and have fewer compatibility issues. Minor releases are issued frequently and OIT will adjust its recommendation as key incompatibilities have been addressed.
If you choose to upgrade and run into problems that cannot be resolved, you may need to revert to an earlier version of macOS, which entails backing up your files and doing a fresh install. For assistance, please bring your computer to an OIT Buff Techs Walk-In Center, contact Dedicated Desktop Support, or contact the IT Service Center at 303-735-4357 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dedicated Desktop Support Customers
Mac systems that are enrolled in Dedicated Desktop Support are still being prevented from upgrading to macOS 11 Big Sur, as OIT works to resolve significant compatibility issues with standard applications and campus IT infrastructure. In the meantime, if you are supported by DDS and are interested in upgrading or have any questions about Big Sur, contact your DDS Technician.
