PlayPosit - Accessibility

PlayPosit Accessibility Topics

Service Overview

PlayPosit is an in-video quiz tool available as a Canvas integration. As of August 2019, students using PlayPosit use the PlayPosit Learner Player 3.0 instead of the Classic Learner Player. Each video quiz is called a “bulb” and can contain a variety of quiz question types.

PlayPosit Accessibility Status

PlayPosit’s student-facing interface is somewhat accessible to screen reader users. Students should be able to complete all question types, although the sidebar and discussions can be confusing to navigate due to problems with labeling, focus handling, and alerts.

CU Boulder OIT is actively engaged with PlayPosit to remediate the issues found through accessibility testing, and this page will be updated as changes are made.

Statements on this page about the accessibility of PlayPosit’s software are based on accessibility testing done in the PlayPosit Learner Player 3.0 in August 2019 or the general platform in 2017, and may no longer represent the current status of the software.

Information for Assistive Technology Users

All users are recommended to use PlayPosit with Google Chrome. Firefox and Safari can be used with some issues; PlayPosit is not usable with Internet Explorer.

Information for Students using Screen Readers

Screen reader users should not encounter any severe issues when using the PlayPosit learner player. However, some labels are confusing and may make navigation more challenging. There are some focus handling problems that may cause additional confusion.

Users should know that when a question appears, the video will pause and focus will move to a sidebar that contains the question. The sidebar contains multiple tabs. The default tab that is always available will display notes and a transcript if one is available. When a question appears, a new tab will appear in the sidebar containing the question. If a discussion is present, then an additional tab containing the discussion will appear in the sidebar and remain present during the video. Focus may not move to the sidebar upon reaching a new question if the sidebar is already open.

The discussion tab is somewhat difficult to use. The nesting of replies is only indicated visually; screen reader users will not be able to determine the relationship between replies using their assistive technology alone.

For additional information and consultation on using PlayPosit’s learner player with a screen reader, please contact digitalaccessibility@colorado.edu.

Information for Instructors using Screen Readers

PlayPosit is not fully accessible to instructors using screen readers. The process of creating a bulb is completely inaccessible; the button to insert a new question can only be accessed via mouse or cursor. Other aspects of the website, such as the navigation and grade-monitoring page, are somewhat accessible, although screen reader users will find editing information on the monitor page difficult or impossible.

Information for Instructors

If you are creating your own videos for use in PlayPosit, please consult the Creating Accessible Videos guide on the OIT Accessibility website for ensuring your content is accessible to all students.

Consider adding caption files to your videos to improve accessibility and usability for all users. If you have a student with a captioning accommodation, please contact the captioning service for support at captioning@colorado.edu

When writing quiz questions, avoid requiring the use of vision to answer the question. For example, instead of asking “How would you summarize the argument made by the man in the red shirt?”, consider referring to the man by name or the order in which he speaks. Email digitalaccessibility@colorado.edu if you’d like to schedule a consultation on the accessibility of your bulbs.
