Creating Accessible Content in D2L

Instructors using the HTML Editor should ensure that they are creating content that is accessible to all students. Recommendations for creating accessible content

  • Use headings to organize your material. Make sure they are used in a logical hierarchical order; don't skip heading levels when creating subsections. For example, if your top-most section is Heading 1, the subsections directly under that heading should be Heading 2 rather than Heading 3 or 4.   • If you are adding images, make sure to include meaningful alternative text for them using the dialog box that appears after you add an image to your page. The alternative text should be sufficient to explain the purpose or content of the image to someone who cannot see it. Add only as much detail to the alt-text as is needed to convey its purpose or meaning. View the WebAIM guidelines for alt-text for more details on how to do this.
    • If your course content includes an infographic that cannot be properly summarized through alt-text, make sure that all of the information contained in the infographic is duplicated in plain text on your page.
  • Use tables only for data, not for layout purposes. If you include a data table, use the Accessibility Checker interface to make it accessible by adding header row indicators and a table caption.
