Canvas Trainings

Teaching with Canvas - Comprehensive

This training is designed for instructors and staff who are ready to start developing courses in Canvas. Topics covered in this two-hour training include: course navigation, communicating with students, managing course content and the gradebook, utilizing the calendar, using Canvas support, and more. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate Canvas using the Global Navigation Bar, the Dashboard, the Course Navigation Bar, and the Help Menu.
  • Communicate with students through Announcements, the Inbox, and Notifications.
  • Manage the Calendar and track student attendance in the Attendance tool.
  • Upload and organize course materials.
  • Create and implement course activities like Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions.
  • Grade Students via the Gradebook, Speedgrader, and Rubrics.

Teaching with Canvas - Basic

This training is designed for instructors and staff who are ready to start developing the foundation for their courses in Canvas. Topics covered in this two-hour, slower and more hands on version of the Introduction to Teaching with Canvas training include: basic course navigation, communicating with students through Canvas, managing course content and quick gradebook setup, and using Canvas support. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate Canvas using the Global Navigation Menu, the Dashboard, and the Course Navigation Menu.
  • Communicate with students through Announcements, the Inbox, and Notifications.
  • Upload and organize course materials using Modules.
  • Create graded items in Assignments.
  • Access Canvas support.

Grading in Canvas

This 1-hour training is for instructors who would like to gain comprehensive knowledge of the Canvas Gradebook. You will learn about the Gradebook’s relationship to other tools in Canvas, methods for efficient Gradebook usage and organization, new Web Grading Sync functionality, and known limitations of the Gradebook as well as workarounds for those limitations. By the end of this training, attendees will be able to:

  • Create new Gradebook columns
  • Enter and edit individual grades as well as multiple grades at once
  • Arrange and filter Gradebook instructor view
  • Use Gradebook tools to communicate with students
  • Utilize SpeedGrader tool to grade assignments
  • Create and manage Grade Schemes
  • Import and export grades using csv files
  • Use the new Web Grading Sync functionality

Grading Drop-In Support

This one-hour drop-in support session is for instructors who would like to get individual assistance with Gradebook in D2L or Canvas. We can help you with general Gradebook settings, grade item calculation settings, final grade calculation, and any other questions you might have about grading in Canvas or D2L. Learning Technology Consultants will be available during the session to provide assistance.

Quizzes in Canvas

This training is designed for instructors who are interested in using quizzes in Canvas. The training will cover setup and functionality, the quiz question types, how to grade quizzes, and will address the use of the new Quizzes LTI versus the previous Canvas quizzes tool. By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Configure and edit general quiz settings
  • Differentiate quiz question types
  • Build and populate quizzes
  • Grade quizzes

Using Canvas to Maximize Student Engagement and Collaboration

This 1.5 hour workshop is for instructors who would like to maximize student engagement and collaboration in their courses. You will learn about the Announcements, Groups, Discussions, Collaborations, Calendar, Inbox, Chat, and conditional release tools in Canvas. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Create and manage groups, announcements, and discussions
  • Encourage and monitor student participation using announcements, discussions, groups, and collaborations
  • Communicate with students using Conversations (Inbox) and Chat features
  • Create and coordinate events and appointment sign-ups in Calendar
  • Conditionally release content and assignments

CU Clickers Trainings

Increase Interaction with CUClickers & iclicker

Are you thinking of ways to make your lectures more interactive? Have you wondered how to confirm whether your students are learning what you’re teaching? Attend OIT's CUClickers training to help set up iClicker in your classroom. The CUClickers service now integrates seamlessly with your Canvas course, and we’ll help set up your integration with Canvas so you can easily download rosters, upload grades, and keep your Canvas grade book current. PlayPosit Trainings

Enhance Your Course with Interactive Video

PlayPosit is an interactive video tool that allows instructors to layer your own custom lesson (quiz questions, text prompts, images, etc.) over video content. This training will go over how to use PlayPosit to enhance student learning by tracking the digestion of video content. Use PlayPosit to flip your classroom, hold students accountable, gather in the moment analytics, create a positive learning community, provide feedback to student submitted videos, and so much more. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify four different ways to use PlayPosit in their course
  • Access PlayPosit in Canvas
  • Add a variety of interactions to a video
  • Monitor the analytics

Turnitin’s PeerMark Trainings

Using Peer Review to Help Students Improve Their Writing

Peer feedback in the classroom increases critical thinking skills, writing skills, and also promotes active learning. PeerMark™ is a comprehensive peer review assignment tool that is part of the Turnitin Feedback Studio suite. It is best used for producing rich students’ feedback. Instructors can create and manage PeerMark™ assignments that allow students to read, review, and evaluate one or many papers submitted by their classmates. By the end of the sessions, participants will be able to:

  • Create and edit PeerMark assignments
  • Grade and Add Comments to PeerMark Reviews
  • Navigate through the PeerMark Assignment Inbox
  • Describe the basic navigation of student's peer review process
  • Describe best practices for using PeerMark

Voicethread Trainings

Creating Collaborative Multimedia Assignments Using VoiceThread

This training is designed for instructors and staff who want to learn how to use VoiceThread. Topics covered in this two-hour training include: VoiceThread navigation, creating and commenting on your VoiceThreads, creating graded assignments, reviewing examples from actual courses, and more. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Upload media to VoiceThread
  • Make a variety of comments using audio, webcam, and text
  • Use comment moderation for assessments
  • Share your VoiceThreads in Canvas
  • Create and grade VoiceThread assignments in Canvas
