Google Workspace Accessibility - Drive

Accessibility Considerations

Google Drive on the web lets you store, access, and edit your files anywhere — on the web, on your hard drive, or on the go. The “new” Google Drive (as opposed to the “classic” view) offers support for screen readers. General information about using Google Drive with a screen reader can be found on Google’s Get started in Google Drive with a screen reader page.

For the best experience with the screen readers, consider the following recommendations:

  • Apple VoiceOver: Chrome is the recommended browser for using VoiceOver. For the best experience, turn off VoiceOver’s Quick Nav feature by pressing the left and right arrows at the same time.
  • NVDA: If using NVDA, Firefox will provide the best functionality.
  • JAWS: NVDA is recommended for Windows users; however, if you are using JAWS, Firefox is the recommended browser.

Google Drive is a file storage and file sharing service; it does not directly allow users to create or edit file contents. As such, users should consider the accessibility issues for the application that created the original file.

Alternatives and/or Workarounds

Users who experience issues working with the Google Drive browser interface can download Google Drive for their desktop. To find instructions and to download the Google Drive desktop application, visit the Install Google Drive on your Mac/PC page.
